Should I move to TO from a small town?
Im a 26 year old female living in a small town and I feel like my life is divided two ways. One way is staying where I am in the job I have (that I don’t like but is financially stable) and growing old here. I have my family in this area and I get a pension through work and other benefits. Frankly, it feels very safe where I am right now. I’ve also recently purchased a new vehicle so I have a car payment I make as well that adds to my finances. The other way is moving to Toronto. I studied fine art in school and am working in a job that is completely opposite to that. I don’t find it fulfi…

Yes—moving from a small town to Toronto can be a good step for career and lifestyle, but it’s also one of the biggest budgeting swings in Canada, so it helps to treat it like a planned transition rather than a leap.
In Toronto, the main financial variables you can “stress test” are rent, transit/parking, and one-time moving costs. Rent is the big one: even moving from a low-cost area, many people find they’ll need a higher monthly budget just to keep the same standard of living (rates vary by building, neighbourhood, and how competitive the rental market is). A practical approach is to calculate your Toronto “minimum viable budget” using your expected rent range, utilities, groceries, and transportation. If you’re able, aim to move with an emergency buffer (many Canadians use several months of expenses as a rule of thumb, especially if job satisfaction is part of the reason for moving).
On the job side, consider timelines: Toronto arts and creative fields can mean more networking and potentially starting in adjacent roles. If your current job is financially stable, you might reduce risk by securing your next plan before or immediately after the move—e.g., lining up interviews, keeping your current benefits if possible, or having a fallback plan.
Logistically, moving a vehicle and relocating yourself/your belongings will have real costs. You can get clearer by using a moving-cost checklist, comparing options, and accounting for packing materials and any storage needs.
If you want a middle ground, some people do a shorter “trial period” lease with a friend and reassess after 3–6 months. Whatever you decide, you can compare verified movers on Boxly and get a clearer picture of realistic relocation planning costs.
